Nunchi: the Korean art of intuition that puts your life in easy mode
If we get serious, we call it cognitive intuition, emotional intelligence...
In Spain we call it: Heartbreak, Heartbeat, Feeling in my bones that it's going to rain, I don't know what... I don't know what.
In Corea? They call it “ nunchi ” or “noonchi” and it is fashionable.
Everything Korean is cool
Lately, Korean things are great: The Squid Game, Parasites, K-Pop, cosmetics... . The #putoreal thing is that language schools are filling up with Korean students ( true story ).
And of course, from the series to export also their way of understanding life, well, that's one step away. That's where the “nunchi” (눈치) comes in. Literally translated, it means something like “the strength” or “the power of the gaze”… which already gives an idea of where the shots are going.
It is a concept full of mystique and history that goes beyond reading the staff well, having people skills or performing well at a party.
It sums up a character and a spirit; to the kind of people who have a good sense of smell and good intuition. To those who go through life on a hunch... and the move always turns out well.
With intuition you are born... and you are made
When we think about “skills” that will be useful to us in life (or in a job interview)... we always think about logic and reason. If we act in an orderly and thorough manner, we will do well.
The nunchi is the complete opposite. He goes for the emotional thing. If you know how to read “the environment” and interpret people's mood well, you will not only be happier on a basic level; but, from a Machiavellian point of view, you will be able to manipulate everything and everyone around you so that they dance to the rhythm of your music.
Several researchers at a Korean university (of course) have even developed a “nunchi scale.”
And then, if your level of intuition can be measured with objective parameters, it can also be studied. And if you can study... well you can improve. As? Well, those who understand say that reading fiction, studying interpretation, with mindfulness, developing empathy - which is listening to people -,...
Very good but...practically speaking, what is the nunchi for?
This is all very cool but it can be very ethereal. Let's think about some practical applications of the nunchi:
- To find parking at Ikea. The nunchi, in this case, helps you “read” the movements of others and see where you fit.
- Dodge slippers. Both to foresee the trajectory of your mother's flying flip-flop and to smell where the moves begin to take place on the street or in the disco and change sidewalks or escape for a drink at the right moment.
- To escape from a toxic relationship. Catching that dirty comment when you go out partying with your friends, that setting limits, that narcissism. The red flags, wow 🚩🚩🚩
- To get a job. Does your future boss like listening to himself more than interviewing you? Very easy: your nunchi tells you that, in that case; Better that you shut up, open your eyes wide as if you were interested in what he says and meet his needs for validation.
- To break the cord. Be in all the parties and flow expertly. Be in your element in any situation. Falling into grace without needing to be the center of attention is also intuition.

Find a cool, new place to have a drink while you walk? Nunchi. A person who briefly crosses your life and with whom you sense something cool? Nunchi. A party that seems boring at first but you stay and after 2 hours it's gone? Nunchi party.
