#10 FUN FACTS ABOUT SOAP... (No. 5 blew my mind)

The soap. That faithful companion of showers, hand washes, and relaxing moments under hot water. You use it daily, but have you ever wondered where it comes from? How is it made? Or even if it has ever been the subject of historical fights! Get your sponge ready, because today we bring you 10 soapy curiosities that will leave you cleaner than a monk's conscience. 

1. IT WAS DISCOVERED BY ACCIDENT

The origin of today's 'soap' is attributed to the fact that, in ancient Rome, on Mount Sapo, the fat from animal sacrifices mixed with the ashes from bonfires and the rain did the rest. From there, the miraculous concoction slid down to the river and, oh surprise, people noticed that their clothes were cleaner.

2. THE SOAP WAS NOT A "MAN'S THING"

In the era of industrial soap production back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the target audience was women, to whom commercial efforts were directed. Therefore, men felt that it 'was not for them' and it was not until about 30-50 years later that its use among the male audience began to become widespread (like with creams... you know the story, don't you? 😉)

3. AS WITH EVERYTHING, THERE ARE WORLD RECORDS

Because humans love absurd records, someone decided to make a 5,200 kilogram soap bar. It was in 2014, in Saudi Arabia. We don't know how long it took to use it up, but that shower must have been epic. The most expensive soap bar? A Qatari Soap priced at $2,800 for a 100g bar. With gold inlays, of course. 

4. BUBBLES DON'T CLEAN

Many people believe that if a soap produces more foam, it cleans better. False. Foam is just a visual and sensory effect when mixing certain ingredients with air, but it's not what removes dirt. There are soaps that barely make bubbles and clean like a boss. 💨 

5. IT WASN'T USED MUCH IN THE MIDDLE AGES

But not for the reasons you think! It's true that it was a luxury good that only the upper classes could access, but, on one hand, 'bathing' was considered to 'weaken' the body and, on the other hand, it was believed to eliminate 'fertility'. So all classes, high-born and lowly, avoided approaching the soap bar more than on special occasions and 'special' rituals.

6. THE VIKINGS WERE SOAP FANATICS

Contrary to the image of dirty and savage barbarians, the Vikings were hygiene obsessives. They made their own soap, which they also used to rinse their hair and keep it blonde. So, if you see a Viking with impeccable hair in a series, it's not a historical error.

7. IT'S LOADED WITH SYMBOLISM

In novels like 'The Great Gatsby' to eliminate 'moral' grime, in Cinderella as a symbol of transformation, in the famous scene from Psycho as a 'contrast' between purity and violence... If you see a pill in a movie, painting or novel; it means a ritual or moment of purification, renewal or introspection is coming soon.

8. THE SOAPS CAN LAST FOR CENTURIES

If you ever find a soap from 30 years ago in your grandmother's house, it probably still works. Bar soaps, especially laundry ones, can last for decades without losing their cleaning power. The only thing that changes is that they become harder than a brick. There are remnants of 'soaps' rescued from Babylon in 2,800 BC.

9. THE SOAP KILLED THE SILENT FILMS 🎥

Well... more or less. The first television ads were for soap, and thanks to the fortune that brands poured into advertising, "soap operas" were born. As soap commercials financed radio and television programs, silent cinema lost its strength and actors had to start speaking. 🎭

10. THE SOAP CAN BURN (BUT DON'T TRY IT AT HOME) 🔥

The soap has fat in its composition, and if it gets too hot, it can catch fire. So, it's not a good idea to put a piece of soap in the microwave to see what happens…

MEl jabón. Ese fiel compañero de duchas, lavados de manos y momentos de relax bajo el agua caliente. Lo usas a diario pero ¿alguna vez te has preguntado de dónde viene? ¿Cómo se hace? ¡O incluso si alguna vez ha sido objeto de peleas históricas! Prepara la esponja, que hoy te traemos 10 curiosidades jabonosas que te van a dejar más limpio que la conciencia de un monje.

1. FUE DESCUBIERTO POR ACCIDENTE

El origen del ‘jabón’ actual se atribuye a que, en la antigua Roma, en el Monte Sapo, la grasa de los sacrificios animales se mezclaba con las cenizas de las hogueras y la lluvia hacía el resto. De ahí, el milagroso menjunje resbalaba hasta el río y, oh sorpresa, la gente notó que la ropa quedaba más limpia.

2. EL JABÓN NO ERA “COSA DE HOMBRES”

En la época de la producción industrial de jabón allá por finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, el público objetivo eran las mujeres, a quienes se destinaban los esfuerzos comerciales. Por ende, los hombres vieron que eso ‘no era para ellos’ y no fue hasta unos 30-50 años después cuando empezó a generalizarse su uso entre el público masculino (como con las cremas… te suena la historia, ¿no? 😉).

3. COMO EN TODO, HAY RECORDS MUNDIALES

Porque el ser humano ama los récords absurdos, alguien decidió fabricar una pastilla de jabón de 5.200 kilos. Fue en 2014, en Arabia Saudita. No sabemos cuánto tardaron en gastarla, pero seguro que esa ducha fue épica. ¿La pastilla más cara?  Un Jabón Quatarí de 2.800$ la barra de 100g. Con incrustaciones de oro, eso sí.

4. LAS BURBUJAS NO LIMPIAN

Mucha gente cree que, si un jabón hace más espuma, limpia mejor. Falso. La espuma es solo un efecto visual y sensorial al mezclar ciertos ingredientes con aire, pero no es lo que elimina la suciedad. Hay jabones que apenas hacen burbujas y limpian como un jefe. 💨

5. EN LA EDAD MEDIA NO SE USABA MUCHO

¡Pero no por las razones que crees! Es cierto que era un bien de lujo al que solo podían acceder las clases altas, pero, por un lado, ‘bañarse’ se consideraba que ‘debilitaba’ el cuerpo y, por otro lado, y que eliminaba la ‘fertilidad’. Así que todas las clases, de alta cuna y baja cama, evitaban acercarse a la pastilla más que en ocasiones y liturgias ‘especiales’.

6. LOS VIKINGOS ERAN FANÁTICOS DEL JABÓN

A diferencia de la imagen de bárbaros sucios y salvajes, los vikingos eran unos obsesivos de la higiene. Fabricaban su propio jabón, que además usaban para aclarar su cabello y mantenerlo rubio. Así que, si ves a un vikingo con el pelo impecable en una serie, no es un error histórico.

7. ESTÁ CARGADITO DE SIMBOLISMO

En novelas como el ‘Gran Gatsy’ para eliminar la mugre ‘moral’, en la Cenicienta como símbolo de transformación, en la famosa escena de Psicosis como ‘contraste’ entre pureza y violencia… . Si ves una pastilla en una peli, cuadro o novela; es que se avecina un ritual o momento de purificación, renovación o introspección en breve.

8. LOS JABONES PUEDEN DURAR SIGLOS

Si alguna vez encuentras un jabón de hace 30 años en la casa de tu abuela, probablemente todavía funcione. Los jabones de barra, especialmente los de lavar ropa, pueden durar décadas sin perder su poder limpiador. Lo único que cambia es que se ponen más duros que un ladrillo. Hay restos de ‘jabones’ rescatados desde Babilonia en el 2.800 A.C.

9. EL JABÓN MATÓ A LAS PELÍCULAS MUDAS 🎥

Bueno… más o menos. Los primeros anuncios de televisión fueron de jabón, y gracias al dineral que metieron las marcas en publicidad, nacieron las “soap operas” (telenovelas). A medida que los comerciales de jabón financiaban los programas de radio y televisión, el cine mudo perdió fuerza y los actores tuvieron que empezar a hablar. 🎭

10. EL JABÓN PUEDE ARDER (PERO NO LO INTENTES EN CASA)🔥

El jabón tiene grasa en su composición, y si se calienta mucho, puede llegar a prender fuego. O sea, que no es buena idea meter un trozo de jabón en el microondas para ver qué pasa…
