Cosmetic advertising or… words that are worthless (part II)

So you don't get confused. Skip the hype and go straight to what really matters, ignoring the misleading headlines used to sell you cosmetics. So you don't get deceived and can choose with your head and heart. ❤ (part II)

We're opening a chapter for lovers of greenery 🍃, greenwahsing or the fashion of the moment.

From least to most demanding (in cosmetics) it would be: vegan, natural and organic.

Vegan

You think: They are all vegetables and grains from the garden.

But what it really means is: There are no things of animal origin. 🐑.

  • Petroleum, plastics, paraffins, silicones, sulfates, parabens… and everything designed in a laboratory is not of animal origin as such… so it's super vegan.

  • Furthermore… with very few exceptions, and much as we may dislike it… many vegan alternatives do not offer the same efficacy and biocompatibility as their counterparts (that is, when you apply it to your skin, does your body respond…?)wattafak? ).

Natural

You think: vegetables and grains that do not harm Mother Earth.

But what it really means is: They come from the plant, animal (here the natural and the vegans enter into conflict) or mineral… extracted by methods physical. In other words, what is excluded is 'chemistry'.

  • pfff it's a mess… because There are natural ingredients that cause a brutal environmental impact. (For example, essential oils require a lot of farmland for the small amount you get from them… and they damage the soil that could be used for other crops). So the impact on water needs… on carbon footprint… often doesn't 'compensate' for putting the 'natural' label on it.

  • Your skin doesn't care if something comes from a 'natural' or 'synthetic' source. What matters to him is what is called (again) biocompatibility. Some people are allergic to nuts, which are completely natural. Or to pollen, which is also completely natural. On the skin, for example, essential oils are often synonymous with allergies for some people. And again, they're completely natural. Gypsy rosemary can be more toxic to you than aspirin… and that depends on the individual and their skin. Just because it's 'natural' doesn't mean it's safer.

  • Finally, there is absolutely NO scientific evidence to support the claim that natural ingredients are better for your health or the environment than synthetic or lab-produced ones. Yes, I'm sure there are crazy scientists inventing all sorts of poisons around the world… but there are also tons of serious people with careers making delicious and healthy things with pipettes.

Ecological

You think: How cool that, besides taking care of myself, they have ingredients from Mother Earth and are super environmentally friendly.

But what it really means is: Well, it's messed up because... although the concept is more or less that... and it's cool..., there are no regulations or single rules to know if something is really ecological or not.

  • A group of private companies (COSMOS) invented the most popular (and quite expensive) "label" to date, which takes into account things like the origin and handling of ingredients, product composition, environmental management, labeling, communication, and more.

  • But hey, there are millions of companies out there that, for a modest price and with not very strict conditions, will put a seal on your products so that consumers can be 'at ease'.

Impossible Mixing Contest...

Can a cosmetic be vegan, but NOT cruelty-free? Yes, for example, a nail polish made only with mineral pigments that is 'tested' on rabbits in China (I'm not kidding, it's more common than you think)...

Can a cosmetic be natural and have 'efficacy' tested in a laboratory?

Yes, for example, an essential oil that has been made simply by crushing and pressing a flower… and then you simply take it to a laboratory to be scientifically examined.

If it's organic, is it vegan? If it's vegan, is it organic?

  • No and no.

  • There are ingredients ecologically allowed such as honey and milk who are not vegan.

  • There are ingredients vegans For example, most essential oils are not very environmentally friendly depending on where they come from and how they are produced.

We hope we've confused you a little, hahaha

No, now I'm serious; this is just about... Don't be swayed by easy headlines, that you have more knowledge than your friend 'the herb' and can drive her crazy when she gets all "sustainable" about dinner or drinks out.

Ultimately, the important thing is that you enjoy it safely on your skin. and double-click as soon as someone shouts that it's now green mode.
