Matte or Dewy Finish: Which One Actually Suits Your Face

A dewy finish (also called glow) is the opposite: it leaves skin looking hydrated and lit from within, like you actually got eight hours. It suits dry, dehydrated or tired-looking skin, and indoor plans.

What a matte finish actually is
A matte finish in cosmetics means the absence of any kind of shine. It's a polished, velvety, soft effect. Peach-skin smooth.
It appeals to anyone looking to play down the look of imperfections (skin that isn't perfectly even) and to keep facial oil under control. It was the beauty standard of the nineties (think the Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer era) and it stands for a clean, classic, timeless, elegant kind of good-looking.
It's also the finish worn by every single actor in your favourite films and series, and by every presenter on TV. In their case, because they need to kill the unwanted effect of flashes and studio lights bouncing off their face and making them shinier than your mum's phone screen at the cinema.
Who does a matte finish suit?
- Oily or combination skin, especially if your T-zone (forehead and nose) starts shining by mid-morning.
- Visible pores or blackheads: matte blurs them, so they read less.
- Heat, humidity or outdoor plans, where sweat is already going to make you shine for free.
- Photos, video, spotlights or a presentation: any direct light reflects far more off skin that already has shine on it.

What a dewy finish (glow) is
A dewy finish is trying to recreate skin that's just been hydrated, misted (as in morning dew, you get the idea) and naturally lit… without ever crossing over into actual shine.
This finish is about pushing the look of skin at its absolute peak, using nourishing, emollient ingredients. Like beans you left soaking overnight.
It's the most common finish among TikTokers, Instagrammers and beauty influencers, and it's the current Korean beauty standard. It goes by a lot of near-identical names with subtle variations (dewy, glowy, chok-chok, cloud skin, glass skin…), but they're all after the same thing: skin that looks like a roast chicken pulled out at exactly the right moment (the kind where you poke it and juice comes out) rather than a chicken breast that spent too long on a dry griddle.
Who does a dewy finish suit?
- Dry or dehydrated skin, or skin that's been feeling tighter as the years go by.
- A dull or tired-looking face: nothing takes the long week off you faster.
- Indoor and evening plans, where the light is warm and forgiving.
- Winter and central heating, which dry you out more than you'd think.

Once you've got the look part sorted, choosing between the two comes down to three factors.
1. How long it lasts
A matte finish holds off shine for most of the day and usually asks for fewer touch-ups, which makes it ideal for skin that leans oily, or for anyone who simply prefers the no-shine look. A dewy finish, on the other hand, is about looking hydrated, almost damp, all day long, so it may ask for a bit more upkeep.
2. Whatever plan you've got on
If the plan is indoors and after dark, a dewy finish is more fun. Same if you've got a presentation and you need to put some life back into a dull, zombie, end-of-week face while still passing for “natural”.
If you're going to be outdoors, or somewhere hot and humid, matte is your answer. And if there are going to be photos, or a spotlight or direct light on your face, go matte.
3. Your skin (and your hang-ups)
The hang-ups of anyone who grew up with oily skin always push them towards matte finishes, to fight off the hated shine. At the other end, people dealing with dry skin, or noticing it getting drier with the years, go team dewy.
The ten-second test
If you're not sure what your skin is, you don't need to go anywhere to find out. Look at your forehead and nose in the middle of the afternoon, in daylight, without having washed your face since the morning.
- Forehead and nose shine, the rest looks normal → combination skin. Matte on the T-zone, dewy everywhere else.
- Your whole face shines → oily skin. Matte.
- No shine and the skin feels tight → dry skin. Dewy.
- No shine and the skin feels comfortable → normal skin. Whichever one the plan calls for.

What makes a cream leave one finish or the other
This is where the marketing stops and the formula starts. The finish isn't magic and it isn't a word somebody printed on the box: it depends on what kind of ingredients the cream contains and how they behave on skin.
Matte comes from powders
These are very fine particulate ingredients that do two things: they absorb the sebum coming up to the surface, and they scatter light instead of reflecting it back from a single spot. Hence the polished, flash-free look.

Dewy comes from emollients
These are cosmetic oils and waxes that leave a flexible film on the skin. That film holds water in and returns light softly, which is exactly what your eye reads as “hydrated skin”.

What does matte finish mean on skin?
That the skin doesn't reflect light. A product with a matte finish leaves an even, velvety look, with no shine on forehead, nose or chin. It's achieved with powdered ingredients that absorb surface sebum and scatter light.
What is a dewy or glow finish?

Does a matte finish dry your skin out?
Not necessarily. What dries skin out is harsh cleansers and high-alcohol products, not the finish itself. A well-formulated matte cream soaks up surface shine while hydrating underneath. In fact, dehydrated oily skin ends up producing more sebum, so skipping moisturiser works against you.
Can I use a matte finish if I have dry skin?
You can, but it probably won't do you any favours: matte emphasises texture and lines on skin that already feels tight. If you need matte for a specific occasion, like a wedding with photos, hydrate well beforehand and apply it only on the T-zone.
